DAY COURSE
Under the guidance and instruction of Toby, you’ll take some simple materials and forge, cut, sand, grind and polish them into something your family and friends will talk about for a very long time. Imagine yourself siting around a picnic table laughing and chatting with friends eating wedges of brie or picking at berries, when someone says “ I love this cheese knife and the board is gorgeous” with a big smile on your face you get to say ‘ I made them my self’.
This day is specially designed so that any complete novice can arrive and find themselves next to an experienced fabricator or carpenter and both will leave at the end with something amazing. Toby will do as much or as little as required for each student to walk away not only proud with lots of new skills, but the owner of a beautiful hand made cheese board and knife set.
Day Course
While the days primary purpose is to make your very own cheese board and cheese knives, you will also get to experience multi discipline artisan skills. Blacksmithing with the 1000’s of years old skill of forging, to shape the steel into a handle for your board, cutting timber using tools such as the band saw or jig saw, then using the big 2x72 belt linishers to shape your handles on the stainless steel cheese knives.
You will design how you want your handle to look, the shape of your cheese board, the shape and feel of the handles for comfort and dexterity, making a completely personalised set so no 2 students leave with same. To add a bit more personal touch, some students choose to bring their own wood for the handles. ( The handles in
the picture are ancient timber from a local tree in their village that holds sentimental value.)
And the best bit is, even if you forget all that you learnt, the prettiest pieces in your kitchen will have been made by you, and will be used for years to come!

You’ll take a blank of steel that has been prepped ready for you and pop it into our 1000c forge. When it’s nice and hot, you’ll hit the steel with a hammer (forging), to create a comfortable shape for your handle

Choose the piece of timber for your board, design how you want it to look and then cut it out. Sand it smooth and wax it with our

We start with a stainless steel knife blank and we need to make a handle to fit. Chose your piece of timber and well get shaping, grinding and sanding till it fits in your hand and looks perfect.

Last of all, but definitely not least, you will wax the board and knives with our local made food safe wax to your beautiful creation to make it super sexy. Then it’s time for the photo shoot and to let the world know via social media how awesome you really are.
