WHAT YOU’LL DO
📝 Design & Layout – The Foundation of a Great Friction Folder
The success of a friction folder lies in its design. You'll learn how to properly lay out the blade and handle to ensure correct proportions, balance, and smooth operation. Every element must align precisely—if the pivot point is off by even a fraction, the blade won’t open or close smoothly. We’ll guide you through the design principles that make a friction folder both functional and visually appealing.
⚙️ Crafting the Pivot & Friction Mechanism
The pivot is the heart of a friction folder, determining how well the blade moves and locks in place through applied pressure. You'll learn how to:
✔ Position and drill the pivot hole with absolute accuracy to ensure a smooth, controlled action
✔ Adjust friction levels so the blade holds its position without needing a locking mechanism
✔ Fit the blade and handle together for seamless movement and a satisfying, reliable feel
🔪 Blade Shaping & Profiling
You'll be working with SF100 stainless steel, a high-performance material known for its durability and edge retention. Learn how to profile, grind, and refine your blade for both function and aesthetics.
🔥 Heat Treatment & Finishing
Proper heat treatment is key to a long-lasting, high-performing blade. You'll go through the process of hardening and tempering SF100 steel to achieve the perfect balance between toughness and sharpness.
🎨 Handle Crafting & Customization
Choose between G10 or Micarta handle materials and shape them for ergonomics, durability, and style. Learn how to fit the handle precisely to the blade, ensuring comfort and a sleek, professional finish.
This is a one-time-only opportunity to learn from a master craftsman in a small, hands-on setting. Spaces are strictly limited, so don’t miss your chance to take part in this exclusive course.

Meet Steve
"I've always been a knife guy, for as long as I can remember anyway. I'm also a tinkerer by nature which I think I get from my grandad. He was a tool maker in Sheffield. Growing up I spent most weekends at his workshop. Fast forward a few decades, I began to design and make my own knives, learning from some of the best in the business along the way. In 2014 Field & Steel was born as a side hussle, then full time in 2020 and I havent looked back. I've met some amazing people through knife making I can honestly say its the best job I've ever had"
